What is this Foundation all about?

The Optimal Hospice Foundation is a non-profit organization established to commit its resources to activities which are intended to ensure hospice care and other compassionate programs are available for families facing a life-limiting illness with an emphasis on the underinsured or uninsured population. Programs include outreach & education, hospice care funding and bereavement support including an annual Kids Camp for children who have experienced the loss of a love one.

Optimal Hospice Foundation was originally created in association with Kern Hospice in 1979 – Kern County’s first hospice agency. In July 2001 when Kern Hospice was acquired by Optimal Healthcare, the existing 501(c)3 changed its name to Optimal Hospice Foundation.

Message from Foundation Director

Since 1979 the Optimal Hospice Foundation has been committed to our Mission to ensure hospice care and other compassionate programs are available for families facing a life-limiting illness. Programs include outreach & education, hospice care funding for the uninsured and bereavement support including an annual Kids Camp for children who have experienced the death of a loved one. During these unprecedented times our commitment has not wavered. Since March, the Foundation has continued to partner with Optimal Hospice Care staff to provide support to our patients and families while following all Department of Public Health guidelines and restrictions. With these guidelines and restrictions in mind the Board of Directors has had to make some very difficult decisions like canceling our Kids Camps and fundraising activities.

While our camps are cancelled, we will continue to provide grief support and resources for all families who need our help. All children who have been referred for 2020 camps or attended in 2019 have been contacted with information on resources that are available through Optimal Hospice Care Bereavement Teams and the Foundation. In addition, resources are posted on our website and Facebook page. We realize the impact this will have but the health and wellness of our campers and counselors must be our number one priority.

Unfortunately, the Foundation is experiencing the financial impact of the pandemic. In addition to the cancellation of our events, several organizations which hold events in support of the Foundation have also cancelled events in response to the call for public safety. As we recognize National Nonprofit Day, we hope you will keep us in mind and considering supporting our efforts. Donations can be made by clicking the donate button, mailing to the Foundation office at 1227 Chester Avenue, Bakersfield, CA 93301 or by contacting Director Cherie Shoemake at 661-716-8000.

As stated above, the Foundation will continue to fulfill our Mission in our communities. If you need assistance, please reach out – let us know how we can help.

Please stay safe and strong. Together we will persevere in these trying times.

Warm Regards,

Cherie Shoemake
